Stretch marks

Stretch marks – causes, prevention, and care options

During pregnancy, the skin has to stretch considerably, especially in the abdominal and breast areas. Particularly in the second half of pregnancy, this often leads to the development of so-called pregnancy marks – medically known as striae distensae or striae gravidarum, but also commonly referred to as stretch marks.

These occur when the elasticity of the connective tissue is overstretched. Between 50 and 90% of all pregnant women experience these tears in the connective tissue – mainly on the abdomen, breasts, hips, and thighs. Initially, they appear reddish to bluish, but fade over time and take on a pearly, skin-like tint.

Stretch marks can also occur outside of pregnancy, for example due to rapid weight gain or hormonal changes. Why they occur in some women and not in others is not yet fully understood. Influencing factors include:

  • Genetic predisposition
  • Firmness of the connective tissue
  • Hormone-induced loosening of the skin
  • Size of the baby
  • Multiple births

While the skin often regenerates well in younger women, the risk of permanent marks increases with repeated pregnancies. Many women affected find these changes disturbing, which is why there is such a wide range of care products available for prevention and treatment.

Pregnancy care oils – effects and selection

Particular attention is paid to care oils that promise to prevent or reduce stretch marks.

Even though many causes cannot be influenced, skin care can still have a supportive effect – especially preventively. It is helpful to avoid excessive weight gain, stay active regularly, and stimulate the skin through pinch massages, showers, and targeted care.

Care oils, lotions, or creams contribute to the suppleness of the skin and promote well-being. Although they do not guarantee stretch mark-free skin, regular use can make the skin more elastic and thus have a preventive effect.

What should pregnant women look for in care products?

The purity of the ingredients is particularly important. Good oils do not require preservatives, do not contain emulsifiers or silicones that are difficult to break down – they are water-free and usually very well tolerated.

The following should be avoided:

  • allergenic fragrances (often at the end of the INCI list)
  • petroleum derivatives such as Paraffinum liquidum
  • synthetic preservatives

Ideal: certified organic oils. However, high-quality conventional oils are also generally suitable – as long as they are formulated to be skin-friendly.

Typical base oils in care products for pregnant women are:

  • Sunflower oil
  • Almond oil
  • Soybean oil
  • Wheat germ oil
  • Avocado oil
  • Sesame oil
  • Safflower oil
  • Caprylic/capric triglyceride (neutral oil from coconut oil)

These oils have a moisturizing effect, smooth the skin, are well tolerated, and are quickly absorbed.

How effective are skin care oils against stretch marks?

One point of criticism remains that many products are based solely on empirical values – well-founded clinical studies are rare. Nevertheless, there are individual active ingredients with proven potential for preventing or reducing stretch marks.
