Mann im Labor

Cosmacon is your cosmetics expert when it comes to developing and optimizing unique formulations. At our company, ten highly qualified and experienced developers work every day to create innovative and modern cosmetic products for you. But what exactly is a cosmetics expert, and what sets them apart? What skills must a cosmetics expert have to turn a formula into a market-ready product? And what aspects actually make up product development?

The focus is on the structure of the skin and the basics of dermatology. These form the basis for the development of an effective and highly compatible cosmetic product. Every cosmetics expert must therefore have in-depth knowledge in the following areas: skin compatibility, efficacy, microbiology, galenics, and sensory analysis. Only when all requirements in all five areas are met can a high-quality skin care product be created. But why are these areas so important, and why do cosmetics experts bear such a high level of responsibility?

Skin compatibility

Allergies and intolerances are becoming increasingly common. This makes it all the more important for cosmetics experts to closely examine the ingredients used in a product. Some substances are more problematic than others because they frequently trigger allergic reactions or even have side effects. This is particularly often the case with chemical colorants, fragrances, and preservatives. Active ingredients from nature, on the other hand, are extremely well tolerated in many cases. Cosmetics experts must therefore carefully consider which substances are suitable for a particular product and which are not. To ensure this, they must have in-depth knowledge of all available raw materials.

Effectiveness

Only an effective product is a good product. What good is a wonderfully scented cream in luxurious packaging if it cannot deliver on its advertising promise? In addition, consumers are becoming increasingly critical. They want to see, feel, and sense that a product can actually deliver the promised results. Our cosmetics expert can provide professional support by organizing dermatological efficacy tests for you. It doesn’t matter whether the focus is on skin moisturization, cleansing performance, antioxidant protection, or wrinkle reduction.

Microbiology

The shelf life of a cosmetic product depends not least on its microbiological stability. This can be ensured with a wide variety of preservatives. However, many of these substances have fallen into disrepute in recent years: just think of parabens, which are now rightly considered a no-go. Nevertheless, in most cases it is not possible to completely dispense with preservatives. Our cosmetics expert therefore acts according to a clear basic rule: as few preservatives as possible and as many as necessary. To achieve this, he has to try and test a lot. Until, at some point, an optimal balance between microbiological stability, skin compatibility, and effectiveness is achieved.

Galenic

The term galenic, which derives from the Greek physician Galenos of Pergamon (born around 130 in Asia Minor, died around 200 in Rome), refers to the science of preparing medicines from a wide variety of (active and auxiliary) substances. It also includes the shaping and technological testing of medicines. Today, galenics is often referred to as pharmaceutical technology. It is also used in the manufacture of cosmetics. Cosmetics experts are familiar with various basic techniques of galenics. These include the separation, combination, and shaping of substances, the application of temperature, and antimicrobial treatment. They must combine the active ingredients with the excipients in a specific dosage form. These can be creams, ointments, or tinctures, for example.

Sensory analysis

Sensory analysis is another science that cosmetics experts devote themselves to. It deals with the description, perception, and evaluation of a product’s properties using our sensory organs. Sensory analysis therefore concerns visual, auditory, tactile, olfactory, and gustatory impressions. A corresponding analysis using test subjects provides important representative results about the properties and individual perceptions of a cosmetic product. These results then allow valuable insights and conclusions to be drawn about the respective product. Cosmetics experts generally recognize three types of sensory analysis: perception tests, which focus on psychological and biochemical aspects; effective tests, which serve to obtain objective findings; and so-called affective tests, which provide purely subjective findings.

Through this combination, Cosmacon has accumulated highly specific specialist knowledge in conjunction with comprehensive cosmetic fundamentals. As a cosmetics expert, Cosmacon can combine your specific product requirements and ideas with general and fundamental content, taking into account its specialist knowledge.
