Hyaluronic serum and essence – moisture boosters for radiant skin

Hyaluronic acid is one of the most popular active ingredients in modern skincare – and with good reason: it makes skin plumper and smoother, reduces wrinkles, and gives you a fresh complexion. Hyaluronic acid is particularly effective in concentrated products such as hyaluronic serum or hyaluronic essence.

But what is the difference between these two product forms – and which one is suitable for which skin type?

What is a hyaluronic serum?

A hyaluronic serum has a gel-like to liquid consistency and contains no fats or oils. This makes it particularly suitable for oily or blemished skin as well as combination skin. It is quickly absorbed, does not weigh down the skin and does not leave an oily film.

Another advantage is that hyaluronic serums usually contain only a few ingredients, with hyaluronic acid itself at the heart of the formula. High-quality formulations combine it with skin-soothing ingredients such as aloe vera or panthenol (provitamin B5). However, the concentration of hyaluronic acid should be at least 1% to be effective.

Advantages of a hyaluronic serum:

  • Ideal for oily or blemished skin
  • Light, non-greasy texture
  • Intensive moisturization
  • Few, but specifically effective ingredients

Note: Fat-soluble active ingredients such as vitamin A (retinol) are better processed in creams than in serums – they are therefore rarely found in hyaluronic serums.

What is a hyaluronic essence?

A hyaluronic essence is a concentrated hyaluronic gel that contains different molecular sizes of hyaluronic acid – usually high-molecular, low-molecular, and oligo-hyaluronic acid – and often the natural building block acetylglucosamine.

Thanks to this combination, a high-quality hyaluronic essence offers both short-term and long-lasting skincare effects:

  • The high-molecular hyaluronic acid forms a moisturizing film on the skin, which immediately provides smoothness and freshness. However, this effect only lasts for a few hours.
  • The low-molecular hyaluronic acid penetrates deep into the skin, where it improves moisture retention and strengthens the skin structure in the long term. It prevents dryness lines and premature skin aging.

Additional plant-based active ingredients can support regeneration and round off the effect.

Effect: Patience brings visible results

Even though a hyaluronic serum or essence quickly makes the skin feel pleasant, it takes a few weeks for the full effect to unfold:

  • A study shows: When applied twice daily over 56 days, a significant tightening of the chin and jaw area was measured.
  • After 12 weeks of regular use, skin elasticity and moisture were significantly improved. Pigment spots also decreased, and the skin felt softer and more balanced overall.

Tip: Don’t give up too soon – hyaluronic acid needs time to develop its full effect.

Disadvantages: Quality comes at a price

  • High-quality serums and essences usually cost over €30
  • slightly sticky texture at higher concentrations is normal and a sign of high product quality
  • The conscious decision not to use inexpensive additives such as PEG emulsifiers, parabens, or sodium benzoate increases manufacturing costs

Advantages at a glance

  • A good hyaluronic essence has an immediate effect for smooth, plump skin.
  • Hyaluronic acid is very well tolerated as it is a substance produced naturally by the body.
  • A hyaluronic serum can reduce both superficial dryness lines and deeper wrinkles.
