Hair removal

Today’s man is divided when it comes to shaving. Full beards are currently back in fashion, but the upper body should be relatively hairless. Many younger men declare their chest, stomach and back hair-free zones, and anyone who wants to show off their tattoos has to shave anyway. But which hair removal method is best? Which care products should you use after shaving? We present the different methods and share our ideas for after-shave care.
Hair removal methods
Epilating
An epilator uses tiny tweezers to pull the hairs out at the root. This method promises four weeks of hair-free skin, but it is painful, especially at first. Over time, the pain dulls somewhat – men with very sensitive skin should try the device on a small area and observe how the skin reacts to this mechanical hair removal. Before epilating, a cooling tonic should be used to tighten the pores and lift the hair. After epilating, a soothing lotion with witch hazel and bisabolol should be used.
Shaving
Many men shave anyway and are familiar with razors. This method is inexpensive and easy, but the hair grows back after just a few days. If you want a smooth body, shaving must become part of your routine.
We also recommend a soothing, light lotion or balm after shaving.
Warm wax
Waxing involves applying warm wax with a spatula. The warm wax coats the hair and opens the pores. This allows the hair to be removed along with the root.
Once the wax has cooled, it is pulled off with a quick tug, taking the hair with it. This also leaves the skin hair-free for up to four weeks. After waxing, the skin should be soothed; a light, cooling aloe vera gel is perfect.
Sugaring
Here, a paste made from sugar and citric acid is applied and the hair is pulled out in the direction of growth. It is similar to waxing and, for some, slightly less painful. But everyone should simply try it out to see which method is more comfortable.
Depilatory cream
The products have a slightly unpleasant smell due to the active ingredient thioglycolic acid. The salts in this acid dissolve the hair after just 6-10 minutes. It is essential to follow the application time, otherwise the skin will become very irritated. This hair removal method is painless and thorough. After a thorough shower, a skin-soothing, alkaline lotion should be used. A texture with witch hazel, arginine as a base and bisabolol is ideal.
Laser treatment
If you want to get rid of your hair for a few years, you can have the skin areas treated with laser. This destroys the hair root and the hair falls out permanently after 3-20 days.
The first lasers based on IPL technology (intense pulsed light) are now also available for home use. However, if you want to avoid damage, have your hair removed professionally. You can find a dermatologist with the appropriate training and equipment at the German Dermatological Laser Society (www.ddl.de).
The procedure is relatively expensive, but very effective on dark hair.
Whichever method you prefer, we recommend regular exfoliation after hair removal to prevent regrowth and inflammation. The skin should be cared for and soothed after every shave. Whether mechanical, light-based or chemical hair removal – hair removal is pure stress for our skin.
