Gommage exfoliation

gommage peeling, mild exfoliation; cellulose; gentle mechanical exfoliation

A new innovation is currently taking the beauty market by storm: gommage. What sounds like a type of French cheese is actually an extremely gentle and effective exfoliation method. The term gommage exfoliation refers to the French word for “to erase”. French and Korean women have been swearing by gommage peeling for quite some time, as this innovation ensures radiantly beautiful skin in a very gentle and skin-friendly way. And what is good for discerning French and Korean women cannot be bad for women in the United Kingdom, Ireland and Australia! And indeed: gommage peeling offers an invaluable advantage, as this method does not require aggressive scrubbing and rubbing and is therefore suitable even for sensitive skin.

That’s why gommage peeling is more than just a trend

Conventional mechanical exfoliating products contain more or less coarse grains, granules and abrasive particles that treat the skin in a similar way to sandpaper. Although this effect is good for removing dead skin particles, the method is not very gentle and is often not at all suitable for sensitive skin. Gommage peeling, on the other hand, is a mild gel that is simply applied to the face, left to dry for a short time and then washed off.

When washing off, very light rubbing or stroking movements should be used if possible. There is absolutely no need to rub hard! But how does gentle stroking produce the exfoliating effect? It’s simple! When washed off, the ingredients in the formula roll up into tiny ‘balls’. They are reminiscent of the soft little shavings that are produced when using an eraser. Based on this similarity, the method was given the name gommage peeling (‘eraser peeling’). Dead skin cells and flakes are removed very gently yet thoroughly by this ‘eraser’ effect. In principle, gommage is a massage-like exfoliation that does not require rubbing.

And perhaps most pleasingly, high-quality gommage exfoliation products can now do without microplastics. Cellular deposits and impurities on the skin can therefore be removed without the use of plastic. Cellulose, for example, is a very good and completely harmless exfoliating agent. There are several types of cellulose that are suitable for use in cosmetics and especially for exfoliants. They support the ‘green’ concept of a product because they are obtained exclusively from plants using a special process. They are also environmentally friendly, vegan, free from animal testing and, of course, GMO-free (GMO stands for ‘genetically modified organism’).

Gommage exfoliation and cellulose

Fortunately, more and more cosmetics suppliers are moving away from using microplastic particles in cosmetics and personal care products. And as already mentioned, there are environmentally friendly alternatives to ingredients such as polyethylene, polypropylene, polyester, polyamide and polyurethane. The basis here is pure natural cellulose from sugar cane, corn, apples or bamboo.

It is ideal for gommage exfoliating products and impresses with its excellent functional properties. These properties include high cleaning performance (comparable to polyethylene or silica) with low abrasion, proven effective removal of residues and dead skin cells, very good photostability, and easy dispersibility and stabilisation. In addition, gommage exfoliating products with the appropriate ingredients contribute to effectively supporting the natural skin regeneration process. Of course, cellulose is 100 per cent biodegradable.

Tests also confirm that cellulose does not cause any skin irritation and can therefore be classified as completely safe and harmless. Certifications in accordance with DIN EN ISO 9001 and DIN EN ISO 22000 also attest to the high quality of the cellulose fibres.

Gommage exfoliator for all skin types

This innovative exfoliator without microplastics clarifies the complexion, refines the pores and ensures a vibrant complexion. Plant extracts such as nettle oil, borneol oil and essential lime oil also soothe the skin and have a regulating effect on sebum production. The exfoliating gels can be produced in different variants for different skin types.

Normal to oily skin benefits from the Gommage Peeling just as much as dry and sensitive skin. So there are definitely alternatives to aggressive exfoliants that dry out and irritate the skin. And of course, gommage exfoliants are not only suitable for the face, but also for the neck and décolleté. Incidentally, users are usually a little irritated when they first use a gommage exfoliant because the formula is unusually mild compared to conventional exfoliants.

But don’t let that fool you. With a gommage exfoliant, users simply massage away pore-clogging deposits and dead skin cells. It works as gently and easily as a soft eraser.
