Digitalisation in cosmetics development: increased efficiency through an innovative LIMS
Precise data management and seamless process control play a crucial role in modern cosmetics development. Our company, Cosmacon GmbH, is rising to this challenge with a pioneering digitisation project supported by funding from the state of Schleswig-Holstein. The aim is to implement a laboratory information and management system (LIMS) that will make the entire R&D process more efficient, transparent and sustainable.
Why is digitalisation so important in cosmetics development?
The manufacture of cosmetic products requires a high degree of accuracy, from recipe creation to quality control. Until now, many of these steps have been carried out manually – a time-consuming and error-prone process. With funding from Schleswig-Holstein, we are now focusing on complete digitalisation:
- Efficient data collection and management: All measurement processes are recorded in real time and automatically stored in the system.
- Optimised process control: Cosmetics development is accelerated by networking all digital measuring devices with the LIMS.
- Error reduction and quality improvement: Automated data collection minimises human error and ensures more reliable results.
The heart of the project: a tailor-made LIMS
With funding from Schleswig-Holstein, we are developing a web-based LIMS that is specifically tailored to the needs of the cosmetics industry. It integrates 25 central company departments and enables:
- Automatic calibration and backup functions
- Real-time data communication with measuring devices
- Digital recipes instead of paper-based documentation
- Mobile working through platform-independent use
The introduction of 16 networked measuring stations with barcode scanners, tablets and label printers will further drive this digital transformation.
Sustainability and cost-effectiveness: the advantages of digitalisation
A central aspect of our project is the sustainable design of business processes. Thanks to funding from Schleswig-Holstein, we are not only improving our internal processes, but also leaving a positive ecological footprint:
- Reduction of CO₂ emissions through paperless processes
- Energy savings through optimised workflows
- Less material waste through precise quantity calculation
In addition, the improved processes increase our efficiency – and thus also our turnover.
Challenges and solutions
Of course, such an innovation project also brings challenges. It is particularly important that employees accept the new technologies. That is why we rely on:

- Customised software that is intuitive and user-friendly
