Its long, often pendulous inflorescences are characteristic.

Under favorable conditions, it takes about four to six months to mature; at high altitudes, the growing period can be significantly longer. Flowering can begin about 60 to 110 days after emergence. As an annual plant, it completes its life cycle within a single growing season. The seeds are harvested before or as they reach full maturity and are then separated from the plant material.

The seeds are of interest to the cosmetics industry due to their constituents. For A. caudatus, for example, peptides have been scientifically characterized. However, this does not automatically mean that every substance found in the seed is responsible for Covertrix’s cosmetic hair-care effects.
