Hydrolyzed Proteins
Hydrolyzed proteins are proteins that underwent the process of hydrolysis.
In general, whole proteins are rather big molecules that cannot be assimilated by the body without intermediate steps. The complex protein molecules must be split into smaller fractions to become usable in form of free amino acids or dipeptides and tripeptides. The reduction to amino acids and peptides happens in the digestive tract. The degradation of the proteins is prerequisite to their passage through the transport channels in the intestinal wall to get into the blood circulation and reach the destinations in the muscular cells and organs.
Therefore the big proteins are split by hydrolysis. The term describes the reduction on the base of the reaction with water. In a simplified way, hydrolysis can be explained as a labour-saving process that relieves the organism of the work to split the big proteins into smaller peptides, the dipeptides and tripeptides.
The advantage of hydrolyzed proteins is that they do not demand much digestive effort from the body to get into the circulation quickly and directly.
Hydrolyzed proteins are popular in sports or sports medicine. The contained “free” amino acids are easy to absorb by the body. Athletes and bodybuilders like to use the benefit of the accelerated nutrient supply to the muscle tissue. Also in cosmetics hydrolyzed proteins are gaining ground. The reason is obvious.
Hydrolyzed proteins in hair care products
Hydrolyzed rice or wheat proteins are popular and proven ingredients in natural cosmetics shampoos. They prevent the hairs from becoming electrically charged during brushing, combing, or styling. Hydrolyzed wheat proteins in shampoos have the qualities of conditioners: they strengthen the hair and improve its vitality and volume.
They enhance hair’s suppleness and help to repair the hair fiber.
Moreover, hydrolyzed proteins are absolutely vegan and water-soluble.
Their signature effect is that they make the hair more resistant and therefore better protected against damages by external aggressions. Large-molecular proteins with their intact structure cannot penetrate into the hair; they only cover the surface with a microscopically fine and externally smoothing protective film. Compared with them, hydrolyzed proteins (with their tiny molecules) penetrate into the hair without any problems. Thanks to their ultra-tiny size, amino acids are perfectly capable of restoring the hair, fortifying its structure and even accelerating hair growth. In addition to shampoos containing hydrolyzed proteins, hair oils and hair treatments with this ingredient are recommendable. Immediately after absorption into the inner hair layers, hydrolyzed proteins start their repairing and restoring actions to which the hair usually responds rapidly with a healthier appearance and a perceptible increase in strength. Hydrolyzed proteins are suitable for all hair types, whether dry, oily, fine or brittle.
Hydrolyzed proteins in skincare products
Hydrolyzed proteins help to boost circulation and skin elasticity. They strengthen skin’s natural protection barrier to reduce or minimize moisture loss. They help to promote healing, regulate keratinization, hold moisture and enhance firmness.
They are ideal for mature, dull or damaged skin and skin with poor circulation.
Hydrolyzed proteins in the cosmetics regulation
Hydrolyzed wheat proteins had been suspected of causing contact allergies in sensitive persons. The EU commission therefore added new stipulations to the cosmetics regulation in 2017. The content of potentially allergenic proteins was limited. The EU regulation 2017/2228 demands that the medium molecular mass of peptides in hydrolyzed wheat proteins used in cosmetic preparations should be restricted to a maximum of 3.5 kDa (kilodalton). The Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety (SCCS) in a revised statement evaluated the use of hydrolyzed wheat proteins in cosmetic products to be safe provided the maximum of 3.5 kDa is not exceeded.
The restriction had been discussed already some years in advance, so the cosmetics industry had sufficient time to adjust to the new regulations on hydrolyzed proteins.
