Upcycling certification

Upcycling is a trend that is becoming more and more prevalent in our lives. In this process, discarded or seemingly useless or no longer usable substances, objects or materials are transformed into products with a completely new life cycle. It is therefore a kind of revaluation. The raw material retains its good properties, from which the new product naturally benefits. We know upcycling, for example, from the furniture and clothing sectors. But upcycling is now also a major topic in cosmetics. We at Cosmacon now also offer upcycling certification.
What is upcycling certification?
Consumers are increasingly placing value on sustainability, waste prevention and the conservation of valuable resources. This also applies to the purchase of cosmetic products. Now, one could believe that upcycling in cosmetics only refers to the packaging. Many suspect that it is about breathing new life into the box or can after the product has been used up and using the containers to store utensils, for example. But that’s not the case. Upcycling in cosmetics involves the holistic use of a raw material, which means that supposedly useless by-products that would normally end up in the trash are used.
A good example is nuts intended for the food trade. Nuts that are too small, damaged or misshapen are usually sorted out immediately because they are unsuitable for the trade. However, they are perfect for pressing into oil! This is how they are turned into valuable body oils, for example, which are beneficial for the skin. But that’s not all: the residues from pressing can also be recycled later and transformed into scrubs and wraps, for example.
The same applies to almonds and apricots: here the kernels can be upcycled. The discarded pulp of artichokes and avocados forms the basis of valuable extracts for skin care, and the tree bark, which is a by-product of the timber industry, is turned into essential oil. A great example of this is cedarwood oil, which is not only used in perfumes but also in creams, lotions and hair care products. By-products of chocolate production, bamboo processing and many other processes are also ideal for cosmetic products and are far too good to be wasted.
But how are consumers supposed to know that upcycled raw materials are used in their cosmetics? With upcycling certification! Certification builds trust and has an extremely positive effect on the likelihood of a purchase. Particularly in today’s world, in which consumers’ ecological awareness is constantly increasing, upcycling certification has a strong influence on the purchasing process, because seals of quality and certificates are highly regarded by the population and make a significant contribution to the brand’s image. If a consumer has the choice between several products that have the same or at least a similar effect, there is a high probability that they will choose the item with the upcycling certification.
Cosmacon’s upcycling certification
We also use many upcycling raw materials in our formulations. Our Team determines the percentage of these raw materials in the product. We then award the upcycling certification for the product. The end customer can then immediately see in a clear and easy-to-understand way how high the upcycling proportion of raw materials in the product actually is. This type of presentation is much more tangible and often more credible for the end customer than all the certifications with their sometimes very obscure criteria or even the unfortunately all too widespread green washing.
For some time now, Cosmacon has been offering various certifications. We are very aware of our high level of responsibility and have all raw materials tested by an independent safety assessor.
Our certifications to date include:
- Microplastic-free
- Animal welfare
- Vegan
- UV filters according to the Hawaiian reef law
- Dermatological skin compatibility (normal/sensitive skin)
- Clean Beauty
- No Allergy
These are also very well received by our customers. We need a maximum of ten working days for each certification, which means that we can also respond to short-term requests. We also stand for fair and transparent prices: at Cosmacon, you only pay a one-time fee of €250 per certification. In addition, we have no hidden costs and no unnecessarily high, bureaucratic effort.
Upcycling certification is still relatively new in our portfolio, but is already in high demand. As described above, we determine the percentage of raw materials obtained through upcycling in the product. The upcycling certification we subsequently award can have a positive effect on the sale of your product. We charge the same one-time fee for upcycling certification as for all other certificates from our company: only 250 euros. There are no follow-up costs for the certificate.
