Rice starch

 

Oryza Sativa (Rice) Starch, Rice wax Starch is a macromolecule of a carbohydrate and consists of glucose units. It is an extremely important energy supplier for humans. No wonder, because plants store their excess energy in starch as a reserve, so to speak! Since rice is extremely rich in carbohydrates, it contains a lot of starch. Depending on the type of rice, the proportion of rice starch can be as high as 75 percent. The starch content is responsible for the adhesive properties of the rice grains, because when cooked, the tiny starch molecules combine, which provides the natural sticking effect. The more starch it contains, the better the rice sticks. Long-grain rice varieties such as basmati or jasmine rice are not as sticky because they have a lower starch content, while stickier round-grain rice varieties such as risotto and sushi rice have a higher starch content.

 

How is rice starch extracted?

The extraction of rice starch is relatively complex. First, the rice must be ground in a mill with the constant addition of weak lye. The resulting pulp is then put into a vat where it is treated with lye and water. In order for coarse pieces to sink to the bottom, the mass is then given some time to settle. The starch is washed out of the sediment with water in a rotating sieve cylinder. The glue can be removed from the starch by treating it with lye and by washing it off. When the upper impure starch layer is removed, the pure starch remains. This can now be dried. This starch is naturally free of gluten and lactose. It is often used in the food industry to make sweets and baked goods. It can also be used to thicken sauces and desserts. Rice starch is also suitable for starching textiles.

 

Rice starch in cosmetics

Finely ground vegetable rice starch is a natural and harmless alternative to mineral talc. It is the optimal absorber for sweat and sebum, which already suggests an obvious application. Rice starch not only improves the gliding and adhesive properties of powder, but also gives it a soft and pleasantly cool feel. When powder with rice starch is applied to the face, it gives the skin a long-lasting, matte and very natural look. It is also able to absorb any amount of moisture. In addition, rice starch powder absorbs excess oil without drying out the skin or clogging the pores. Ultimately, it also helps to keep the skin’s excess oil production under control throughout the day.

 

Rice is very versatile

In addition, rice starch can be incorporated into many other formulations. In face creams, for example, but also in deodorants and in bath additives. This nice starch makes the skin beautifully smooth, supple, and soft. It is also popular wherever a certain blotting effect is desired. As pure rice starch is very skin-friendly and gentle, it is even suitable for sensitive baby skin (e.g., for the care of the nappy area). It can be combined well with active ingredients such as sunflower oil or mallow and camomile extracts.

Other cosmetic raw materials from rice

But rice offers not only rice starch, but even more. Rice oil, for example, which is often also called rice germ oil. It is rich in palmitic acid, stearic acid, oleic acid, linoleic acid as well as linolenic acid and is extracted from rice bran, which is rich in protein, fat, and vitamins. Rice oil is ideal for sensitive, irritated and/or barrier-disrupted skin and has a soothing effect. Due to the content of antioxidant as well as UVA and UVB absorbing, natural oryzanol, it can be used very well in day care and sun protection products. Other uses: as a base oil for cleansing milk, for light moisturisers and for body lotions. Rice bran extract also proves its worth in skin care. As an effective antioxidant, rice bran extract can protect the skin from uneven or excessive pigmentation, for example. In contrast to rice starch, the focus here is on the brightening effect, as the extract preserves the youthful radiance of the skin.

Rice bran wax, on the other hand, acts as a gentle but effective softener that fades away fine lines and wrinkles.
