Reduce hair growth
For example, a full and luxuriant mane stands for youthfulness, vitality, beauty, and vitality, while thinning hair is often associated with an older age and/or health problems. Even though hairstyle trends have changed considerably over the centuries, hair still plays a major role in self-perception and also in the judgement of other people.
People who are satisfied with their hair automatically radiate more self-confidence; conversely, problems such as hair loss and bald patches often lead to massive inferiority complexes.
Strong hair growth is great after all…
One could therefore assume that fast and strong hair growth is desirable in any case. However, this is not the case. For some people, hair grows extremely fast … and usually in undesirable places. Those affected are exposed to immense suffering and sometimes no longer dare to go out in public. However, it is possible to reduce hair growth. In this case, special active substances are used, which we will introduce to you below.
What is the cause?
Untypically strong, non-androgen-dependent and diffuse hair growth is medically called hypertrichosis. It can be congenital or acquired. There are many causes. For example, it often occurs in scleroderma, in chronic porphyria syndrome, in myxoedema in the context of an underactive thyroid gland and in fetal alcohol syndrome. Malnutrition in anorexia nervosa, extreme stress and the use of certain medications can also promote hypertrichosis.
Basically, a distinction is made between the generalised and the circumscribed form. Generalised hypertrichosis covers a wide area, while the so-called circumscribed form only affects a few areas of the body. Mostly, these are moles or birthmarks that are overgrown with long black hairs.
If the excessive hair growth is similar to a ponytail on the lower back, the underlying spine is most likely malformed. Trisomy 18, a chromosomal abnormality, is also often associated with hypertrichosis.
When it is recommended to reduce hair growth?
On the other hand, increased hair growth according to the male pattern mainly affects women from southern regions. Here, the increased hair mainly appears in the genital area, on the chest and on the face. Doctors speak of genetic hirsutism in such cases. The trigger is presumably an increased sensitivity of the hair follicles to male hormones; the increased hair growth then first appears usually at the beginning of puberty.
Fortunately, this predisposition is completely harmless, but it is cosmetically very disturbing for most women. Only in very rare cases, however, the testosterone and dehydroepiandrosterone levels are elevated. A common form of hirsutism is the so-called “lady’s beard”. In nine out of ten cases, however, the trigger of the male hairiness in women cannot be determined.
However, regardless of the cause, to reduce hair growth improves the quality of life of those affected considerably. The actually rather cosmetic problem usually has an immense negative influence on the psyche and self-confidence. Fortunately, creams, lotions and spa treatments can help to successfully reduce hair growth.
Innovative ways to reduce hair growth
If medications are responsible for the increased hair growth, they can be discontinued or replaced by another active ingredient after consultation with the treating doctor. If the hormone balance is imbalanced, an appropriate therapy can help to get the strong hair growth under control. Classic methods such as regular shaving, plucking or electroepilation are not always sufficient to reduce hair growth. However, there are now good active ingredients that help to reduce hair growth.
Introducing the active ingredients
One example is chelidonin. This is a processed molecule of plant origin that can be integrated into a gel cream, among other things. As elaborate tests have shown, the speed of hair growth in the face is reduced by 13.5 percent already after an application period of two months. The cross-section of the hair also decreased visibly in the same period: by as much as 14 percent. So-called “5 o’clock shadow” after shaving could be delayed by three hours in the tests thanks to chelidonin.
The active ingredient is also suitable for women. A deodorant roll-on with chelidonin, for example, leads to a considerable reduction in hair growth under the armpits.
But the preparations not only reduce the proliferation of hair root cells, they also alleviate inflammation that usually results from hair removal, for example with wax or a shave, by regulating the production of the inflammatory mediators PGE2, IL8 and VEGF. Chelidonin also works very well in after-shave products.
But there are more active ingredients that help reduce hair growth. Two particularly effective examples: Dihydromyricetin, PHC A-7 and Gymnema Sylvestre Leaf Extract:
