Oleuropein is obtained through extraction from dried olive leaves. Modern extraction methods such as ultrasonic extraction or CO₂ extraction enable the gentle isolation of active ingredients with high purity. Standardized oleuropein powder typically contains at least 80% oleuropein and is available as a hygroscopic, pale yellow crystalline powder.

Studies demonstrate that oleuropein exhibits antioxidant, antimicrobial, and anti-inflammatory properties at concentrations of 0.5% to 1% in cosmetic formulations. In vitro studies show that oleuropein is even more effective than vitamin E at scavenging free radicals and reducing oxidative stress. The EC₅₀ values are below 10 µM—an indication of its high efficacy at low doses.

  • Antioxidant performance: In a direct comparison with Trolox and vitamin C, oleuropein performed excellently in neutralizing free radicals (e.g., superoxide anions, DPPH radicals).
  • Anti-inflammatory effect: In preclinical efficacy models, a 0.5 mg application per skin area reduced inflammation by over 30%—comparable to dexamethasone.
  • Antimicrobial effect: As little as 0.1% oleuropein slowed the growth of Staphylococcus aureus; at 0.4% and above, growth was completely inhibited.
