Omegablue
Blueberry Seed Extract – Effective Skincare with the Power of Wild Berries
Omegablue: A Miracle Ingredient – Skin Protection Through Upcycling Innovation
In the world of cosmetics and skincare, one term is gaining increasing attention: Omegablue. This innovative ingredient combines scientifically proven efficacy with sustainable upcycling and broad applicability—especially for sensitive and stressed skin types.
What is Omegablue?
Omegablue® is a CO₂ extract derived from the seeds of European blueberries (Vaccinium myrtillus L.), which were previously used in dietary supplements. Processing the press residues (upcycling) yields a high-quality active ingredient containing essential polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), tocopherols, tocotrienols, and phytosterols. These ingredients play a central role in maintaining and regenerating the skin barrier.

Efficacy of Omegablue: What studies show
The efficacy of Omegablue was impressively demonstrated in two placebo-controlled clinical studies.
Study 1: Regeneration following irritation with sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS)
Following skin irritation caused by a 24-hour SLS patch, a cream containing 2% Omegablue was applied twice daily for three days. Result: The skin treated with Omegablue showed complete restoration of the skin barrier after 72 hours, while the placebo-treated and untreated skin remained damaged.
Study 2: Use in Psoriasis and Eczema
In another double-blind study involving 40 participants suffering from psoriasis or eczema, twice-daily application of a cream containing 2% Omegablue over 30 days showed significant improvements:
- Erythema in eczema: 37.5% reduction
- Itching in eczema: 42.8% reduction
- Erythema in psoriasis: 27% reduction
- Scaling in psoriasis: 28% reduction
- Overall symptoms (EASI/PASI): 35% and 27% reductions, respectively
These results demonstrate that Omegablue is clinically effective even at a concentration as low as 2%.
Benefits of Omegablue
Omegablue offers numerous benefits for cosmetic applications:
- Skin barrier protection through essential omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids (e.g., linoleic acid)
- Rapid regeneration of damaged skin, e.g., after irritation or in baby skin care
- Suitable for sensitive skin, including on the face and sensitive areas of the body
- Anti-aging effects due to the antioxidant properties of the contained tocopherols and tocotrienols
- Multifunctionality: Can be used in skin, hair, and scalp care
- Sustainability: Upcycled from waste materials using a green CO₂ extraction process
- Compliant with natural cosmetics standards and free of preservatives
Disadvantages of Omegablue
Despite its many strengths, the active ingredient also presents some challenges:
- Fat solubility: Only suitable for formulations with an oil phase, therefore not for purely aqueous systems
- Dark color: May cause color changes in transparent or very light-colored products
- Dependence on availability: Since it is an upcycled raw material, availability may fluctuate seasonally
- Price point: Higher than standard oils, which necessitates premium positioning
