Sesame oil

Sesamum Indicum (Sesame) Seed Oil Sesame oil is one of the most valuable oils because the seeds used in its production are still harvested by hand. About one tonne of sesame seeds is needed for 300 litres of sesame oil. The starting plant is the sesame plant, a herbaceous annual that is native mainly to India, China, Egypt, Mexico and Sudan.

The elongated capsules with the seeds ripen all year round, but never all at the same time. They are painstakingly cut off by hand and then dried so that the seeds separate from the capsules. In the production process, a distinction is made between dark and light sesame oil: to produce the dark version, the dried seeds must first be roasted. And the production methods are also different: there is cold-pressed, native, refined and unrefined sesame oil. The pressed seeds have a very high protein content and are processed into high-quality animal feed after pressing.

Properties and uses of sesame oil

Depending on the production process, sesame oil has a more or less pronounced nutty flavour. With a content of almost 45 percent of polyunsaturated linoleic acid, it has an intensive health-promoting effect. Among other things, linoleic acid can lower blood fat levels and strengthen blood clotting and the heart.

It is also rich in lecithin and choline. Lecithin in particular has a very positive effect on the nervous system as well as the brain, liver and gall bladder. Regular consumption is also said to reduce the risk of arteriosclerosis. Sesame oil is also said to have a mild preventive effect against osteoporosis.

But sesame oil also contains vitamins, above all vitamin B1, B2 and vitamin E. Vitamin E is considered a kind of fountain of youth for the skin and keeps it smooth and beautiful.

In the kitchen, it is mainly used for traditional Asian dishes and fresh salads. It also plays an important role in the holistic medicine of India, Ayurveda.

Applications in cosmetics

For skin care, the oil is almost indispensable. Even the legendary Empress Sisi is said to have mixed sesame oil into her cream to keep her skin particularly supple and healthy. The oil gives the skin a radiant glow and protects it from harmful influences. If it is included in day or night creams, it can keep the skin soft and supple and delay skin ageing by effectively revitalising the cells. However, it is also possible to apply sesame oil purely to the skin, where it has a refatting effect. Especially for people with very dry or irritated skin, the oil is a blessing. It prevents the epidermis from drying out and contributes to a firm, elastic tissue. Furthermore, sesame oil is an excellent carrier oil that not only penetrates very deeply into the skin, but can also serve optimally as a massage oil.

As sesame oil is very well tolerated and mild, it is also very suitable for baby care. It has a slight sun protection factor, so it is also often added to sun protection oils.

However, if you suffer from acne or inflammatory skin diseases, you should first test the oil or corresponding products in the crook of your arm, as undesirable reactions may occur.

Sesame oil is also a true miracle cure for brittle, split, dry and exhausted hair. It moisturises the hair and protects it from environmental influences. A regular hair treatment with products containing sesame oil makes the hair shiny and gives it much more body and stability. It is also much easier to comb.

Sesame oil is also very popular in foot care, as it not only regenerates skin and calluses, but also protects the feet from fungal infections thanks to its antibacterial effect.
