Vitamin B2 was discovered in 1920 when scientists were able to isolate it from milk. The two alternative names lactoflavin and riboflavin have very clear meanings. Lactoflavin is derived from the word “lacto” (milk) and “flavin”, a yellow chromophore found in vitamin B2. The name riboflavin is due to the ribityl residue (“ribo”). Vitamin G is particularly high in milk and dairy products, but many vegetables (asparagus, spinach, broccoli), muscle meat, fish, wholemeal products, and eggs also have high levels. An adult person has a daily requirement of about 1.2 milligrams. In a balanced diet, the requirement can be met without any problems through normal food intake.

Vitamin B2 is important

As a water-soluble vitamin, it is involved in many metabolic processes in the human body. It is therefore found in every single cell of the body. It plays a particularly important role in the conversion of carbohydrates, protein and fat into nutrients. Vitamin G can influence human growth and, in combination with vitamin A, support the repair of the body’s own tissue. In cosmetics, the vitamin is very often used to treat flaky, dry skin. It is involved in the chemical regeneration of the enzyme glutathione, which is primarily responsible for protecting against possible damage from the dreaded free radicals.

A deficiency of this vitamin can manifest itself in several ways. Those affected often feel tired and lethargic, often the immune system is weakened or there is an increased sensitivity to light. External signs are mainly a waxy appearance of the skin in connection with scaly and very dry areas. Very typical are also cracked corners of the mouth, which are often very painful.

Vitamin G also important in cosmetics

In cosmetics, however, Vitamin G usually fulfils a very special purpose. It has an extremely important function in all those metabolic processes that serve to produce energy, which is especially true for the growth of strong fingernails, full and thick hair as well as resistant and healthy house cells. By the way, an overdose of this vitamin is not possible at all. An important supplier is the well-known brewer’s yeast, which is often offered in tablet form and recommended by many dermatologists.

As a water-soluble vitamin, it is essential for human growth and health, and has been shown to have some beneficial properties for the skin. Some studies suggest that riboflavin can help soften the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, and it can also help improve the overall tone and texture of the skin. In cosmetics, it is commonly used in skin care products such as moisturisers, serums, and creams.

Fact Sheet

CAS number: 83-88-5

Alternative names: Lactoflavin, Riboflavin, Lactocrome

Properties: yellow to slightly orange-coloured solid with a bitter taste

Solubility: very poor in water and alcohol, insoluble in diethyl ether and acetone

Stability: sensitive to light, but stable to oxygen and heat, is not destroyed by cooking.

Physiological function: precursor for flavin coenzymes

Toxicity: extremely low, excess vitamin B2 is excreted in the urine.

We like to work with this vitamin G-containing raw material:

Tradename

INCI

Supplier

Remarks

Unipertan VEG-2002

Butylene Glycol (and) Acetyl Tyrosine (and) Hydrolyzed Vegetable Protein (and) Adenosine Triphosphate (and) Riboflavin

Givaudan Active Beauty

Unipertan VEG-24

Butylene Glycol (and) Acetyl Tyrosine (and) Hydrolyzed Vegetable Protein (and) Adenosine Triphosphate (and) Riboflavin

Givaudan Active Beauty

Riboflavin 98%

Riboflavin

VMR

Vitamin B Complex

Glycerin, Aqua, Faex Extract, Potassium Sorbate, Niacinamide, Panthenol, Biotin, Inositol, Pyridoxine HCL, Thiamine HCL, Riboflavin, Cyanocobalamin

Novoclon GmbH

Conclusion: Riboflavin in cosmetics.

In summary, it can be said that Vitamin G is simply indispensable for healthy growth or sufficient regeneration of skin, hair, and nails.
