Although the body needs UV light\u2014for example, to produce vitamin D\u2014excessive exposure can cause significant damage. Possible consequences include inflammation, disruption of the skin barrier, premature skin aging, immunosuppression, and even skin cancer.<\/p>\n<p>The keratinocytes of the epidermis and the fibroblasts of the dermis are particularly affected. UV rays promote the formation of free radicals and reactive oxygen species (ROS), which can damage cell membranes, proteins, and DNA.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>UVA and UVB Radiation<\/h2>\n<p>While high-energy UVC radiation is absorbed by the atmosphere, UVA and UVB rays reach the Earth\u2019s surface.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>UVB rays (280\u2013320 nm)<\/b> primarily affect the upper layers of the skin and are the main cause of sunburn and acute inflammatory reactions.<\/li>\n<li><b>UVA rays (320\u2013400 nm)<\/b> penetrate deeper into the dermis and promote the formation of free radicals as well as photoaging.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Although the skin has natural protective mechanisms such as antioxidant enzymes and repair systems, these can be overwhelmed by intense UV exposure.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Hyaluronic Acid in UV Protection: Protection Against Cell Damage<\/h2>\n<p>Several scientific studies have investigated the effectiveness of hyaluronic acid in UV protection. Both high-molecular-weight hyaluronic acid and various hyaluronic acid fragments were tested for their ability to reduce UV-induced cell damage.<\/p>\n<p>In cell culture experiments with keratinocytes, it was shown that pretreatment with hyaluronic acid significantly increased the number of viable cells following UVA and UVB irradiation. The protective effect was evident both in cases of direct UVB irradiation and in cases of UVA-induced oxidative damage.<\/p>\n<p>Of particular interest: Preventive application proved to be significantly more effective than treatment following UV exposure.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Impact on Inflammation and Photoaging<\/h2>\n<p>UV radiation promotes the release of pro-inflammatory mediators such as interleukin-1\u03b1 (IL-1\u03b1). This cytokine plays a central role in sunburn reactions, skin redness, and inflammation.<\/p>\n<p>Studies show that pretreatment with hyaluronic acid can significantly reduce the increase in IL-1\u03b1 caused by UVB radiation. This attenuates inflammatory reactions and provides better protection for the skin.<\/p>\n<p>Furthermore, it has been shown that hyaluronic acid inhibits the UV-induced increase in collagenase. This enzyme breaks down collagen fibers and is considered one of the most important factors in photoaging.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Antioxidant Effect of Hyaluronic Acid<\/h2>\n<p>The protective effect of hyaluronic acid in UV protection is not based solely on its physical properties. Rather, its antioxidant potential also appears to play an important role.<\/p>\n<p>Free radicals are generated immediately during UV exposure. Only if hyaluronic acid is present in sufficient concentration at the time of UV exposure can it effectively neutralize these harmful molecules.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, hyaluronic acid interacts with the CD44 receptor on the cell surface. This binding stabilizes cell-to-cell contacts and supports tissue integrity even under UV stress.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Protection Against Apoptosis<\/h2>\n<p>Intense UV exposure can trigger programmed cell death (apoptosis). This mechanism allows the body to remove irreparably damaged cells.<\/p>\n<p>In various studies, pretreatment with hyaluronic acid significantly reduced the number of apoptotic cells. This suggests active cell protection and greater resistance to UV-induced damage.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Hyaluronic Acid in UV Protection: Conclusion<\/h2>\n<p>Scientific data show that hyaluronic acid offers significantly more benefits in UV protection than mere moisturization.<\/p>\n<p>Hyaluronic acid can:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Protect keratinocytes and fibroblasts from UV-induced damage<\/li>\n<li>Reduce inflammatory reactions<\/li>\n<li>Mitigate the formation of free radicals<\/li>\n<li>Inhibit the increase in collagenase<\/li>\n<li>counteract light-induced skin aging<\/li>\n<li>support skin regeneration<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>It is crucial that hyaluronic acid is already present in the skin before or during UV exposure.
