Glycosaminoglycan is an important component of our connective tissue and fulfills many tasks. For example, it plays a major role in cell migration, i.e., cell movement within our body, and in cell proliferation (cell growth and cell division). It is also largely responsible for water storage: after all, it can bind a thousand times its own weight in water. The human body contains an average of 15 grams of hyaluronic acid. About a third of this is replaced every day. Among other places, it is also found in the stratum corneum, i.e., the uppermost layers of the epidermis. However, as the hyaluronic acid content decreases with age and correspondingly less water is bound, fine lines and wrinkles eventually form due to the decline in production. To counteract this, a hyaluronic cream is recommended.

How is hyaluronic acid obtained?

In the past, rooster combs were mainly used to obtain hyaluronic acid, from which the substance was then extracted. However, this process had a major disadvantage: since it was not possible to completely remove the proteins contained in the rooster combs, the use of hyaluronic acid often led to severe allergic reactions. There was also a risk that pathogens could be transmitted through animal hyaluronic acid. However, there is now a better method of extracting hyaluronic acid.

Biotechnological processes can be used to ferment proteins from yeast. The hyaluronic acid obtained in this way is then filtered and purified several times for use in hyaluronic acid cream. It is free of animal substances and therefore poses no allergy risk. It is also significantly purer than hyaluronic acid derived from animal material. That is why fermented hyaluronic acid is now used almost exclusively in hyaluronic acid products.

Are there different types of hyaluronic acid?

Science recognizes several different forms.

High-molecular hyaluronic acid

Here, the molecules are so large that the hyaluronic acid cannot penetrate the horny layer of our skin. Instead, it forms a transparent film on the skin that protects against transepidermal water loss. This makes the skin appear finer, smoother, and firmer.

Low molecular weight hyaluronic acid

In this form, the molecules are much smaller, so that overcoming the skin barrier is no problem. It thus acts as a moisture reservoir for the skin. It does not form a film, is slightly thinner and strengthens the connections between the cells in the stratum corneum.

Oligo-hyaluronic acid

This is by far the smallest hyaluronic acid and can therefore penetrate deepest into the skin. There it provides deep moisturization and repairs damaged cells. It has impressive antioxidant properties and offers excellent results in the anti-aging segment.

Hyaluron cream

Hyaluronic acid is particularly well suited for a hyaluron cream.

A hyaluronic cream is a spreadable formulation for external use. It consists mainly of an oily and an aqueous component. Both components are mixed together in an emulsion and are ideal for dry or very dry skin.

The effect of a hyaluronic cream

Studies have shown that a hyaluronic acid cream or gel actually helps against wrinkles.

The skin is moisturized down to its deeper layers. This creates so-called moisture depots, which are responsible for the elasticity of our skin. These depots also act as a natural skin shield. This makes the skin more resistant to external influences such as environmental toxins and UV rays. Hyaluronic cream therefore ensures both a wrinkle-free and healthy complexion. Hyaluronic acid cream is not only intended for people with mature skin. Even younger people can experience a decline in the production of hyaluronic acid in the body. This is often the case with environmental pollution and stress. Hyaluronic acid cream is therefore increasingly recommended for younger people as well. The moisture retention plumps up the cells again and the complexion appears younger and firmer. Compared to other active ingredients, facial care with hyaluronic acid cream also offers a very important advantage: since hyaluronic acid is a substance produced naturally by the body, it is accepted by the organism, meaning that there are virtually no hypersensitivity reactions or side effects.

A good hyaluronic acid cream usually contains about one percent pure hyaluronic acid and/or its salts or esters. For a long-lasting and effective effect, the largest proportion should consist of oligo hyaluronic acid.

Such creams will never be found for less than €20 each and always have a slightly sticky texture. Hyaluronic acid in higher concentrations has this slightly sticky texture, which is temporary and can be recognized in any high-quality and rich hyaluronic acid product.

Which hyaluronic acid is best for a hyaluronic cream?

Long-chain or high-molecular hyaluronic acid mainly acts on the uppermost layer of our skin. There it binds moisture. The effect of this type of hyaluronic acid is rather superficial, but immediately visible. In combination with short-chain or low-molecular hyaluronic acid, it penetrates into the deeper layers of the skin. There it keeps the water balance in equilibrium. After applying the hyaluronic cream, the effect is not immediately visible, but it lasts longer.

Ideally, both forms of acid are combined in a hyaluronic cream. This moisturizes the uppermost layer of skin, immediately improving the complexion. However, it is also important that the hyaluronic cream can penetrate deeper layers of skin, where it contributes to longer-term improvements. A good hyaluronic cream should therefore contain the substance in different molecular sizes. This ensures ideal results in both the long and short term.

Acetylated hyaluronic acid is currently considered the absolute best. It is the perfect active ingredient for a premium hyaluronic cream or a particularly exclusive hyaluronic product in a 2-chamber packaging. It has both hydrophilic and lipophilic properties and penetrates even deeper into the skin than other hyaluronic acids. Its secret:

The lipophilic acetyl group helps the hyaluronic cream to adhere firmly, which contributes to a significantly lower evaporation effect. Studies have also shown that after four weeks of regular use of acetylated hyaluronic acid in a concentration of 0.1 percent, skin elasticity improved by a factor of 1.6 thanks to the hyaluronic gel.

Sodium acetylated hyaluronate is a special HA derivative synthesized from the natural moisturizing factor sodium hyaluronate through an acetylation reaction. Compared to non-acetylated hyaluronic acid, it ensures particularly good skin elasticity. A corresponding hyaluronic cream should also be less fibrous and sticky.

Fact sheet: Hyaluronic acid as an active ingredient in hyaluronic acid cream

INCI: Hyaluronic Acid (CAS number: 9004-61-9) / Sodium Hyaluronate (CAS number: 9067-32-7) / Hydrolyzed Hyaluronic Acid (Acetylated Hyaluronic Acid / CAS number: 9004-61-9 )

Natural occurrence: Skin, intervertebral discs, vitreous body, cartilage, between the joints

Effect: Binds large amounts of water

Areas of application: Primarily hyaluronic acid cream

Hyaluronic acid cream for premium cosmetic lines

Hyaluronic acid is a premium active ingredient that is ideal for high-quality facial care lines. If you would like to add a hyaluronic acid cream to your skincare line, Cosmacon will be happy to assist you.

When products are needed quickly:

✨ Our partner Tojo Cosmetics offers innovative, active ingredient-rich private label products – quickly available, high quality and perfect for brands that want to impress with passion and quality.

Sources:

Wohlrab W, Neubert R, Wohlrab J.
