The small jojoba shrub is a modest plant that grows in the hot deserts of America and requires only 20 ml of rainfall per year. The indigenous people of America use the jojoba oil from the shrub as a remedy for skin diseases. They call it \u2018liquid gold\u2019 and pronounce it \u2018hohoba\u2019. They have been using it for centuries for skin and hair care and also to protect against the sun. Jojoba oil is subject to strong harvest and price fluctuations. The largest producing countries are Israel and Argentina. Even new plantations only yield their first harvest after 5-6 years, which is how long it takes for the nuts of the jojoba shrub to be harvested.<\/p>\n

This oil is a wax<\/h3>\n

Jojoba oil is extracted from olive-sized seeds and is a wax. It does not consist of glycerine esters, but of compounds of long-chain unsaturated fatty acids and long-chain alcohols. Jojoba oil is extremely heat-stable (up to 300\u00b0C) and also very resistant to bacteria. It solidifies in the refrigerator but does not need to be stored there \u2013 it can be kept for several years at room temperature. It cannot be used as an edible oil because it cannot be metabolised.<\/p>\n

Jojoba oil in cosmetics<\/h3>\n

Jojoba oil is an excellent, deeply effective lipid. It can regulate the skin’s moisture balance and stabilise the hydrolipid layer.<\/p>\n

This makes it ideal for treating dry and itchy skin (e.g. in cases of neurodermatitis). Despite its waxy character, it spreads easily and is completely absorbed. It does not leave a greasy film and has a natural sun protection factor of approx. 4. Due to its high content of unsaponifiable components and vitamin E, it is ideal for preventing\/treating pregnancy and stretch marks and can also regenerate scar tissue when used regularly. It has a natural sun protection factor of 4.<\/p>\n
